In indigenous swine flu vaccine is far from ready but India has given the green signal to two foreign pharmaceutical giants to begin human trials of their vaccine in the country. According to the health ministry, India has already placed orders for more than one million doses of swine flu vaccines from GSK and Novartis. But before that is administered, the government wants to ensure that the vaccines are absolutely safe.

Madison and the University of Wisconsin are continuing their push to vaccinate students and a targeted group of community members against the swine flu by offering new H1N1 vaccine clinics in the next few weeks. Public Health-Madison and Dane County will be offering H1N1 clinics at six locations in Madison. The vaccines will be given to pregnant women, people who live with or care for infants less than six months old.

The FDA has approved a new biologic drug called Stelara for the treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults. Plaque psoriasis is an immune system disorder that results in the rapid overproduction of skin cells. According to the FDA, about 6 million people in the US have plaque psoriasis, which is characterized by thickened patches of inflamed, red skin, often covered with silvery scales.

Lead researcher Dr Julie Bower, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles has found that patients who experience fatigue during radiotherapy might be reacting to the activation of the pro-inflammatory cytokine network, a known inflammatory pathway. In a study conducted on 20 people, the researchers discovered that increases in serum markers of cytokine activity, specifically IL-1 receptor antagonist and C-reactive protein, were also linked with fatigue.

According to new research from the University of Sydney, Nicotinamide (VitB3), a vitamin found in common foods like meats, nuts, grains and cereals, may provide the next advance in skin cancer prevention.
